What Does ISO 9001 Cover?

ISO 9001 covers a variety of elements, the main components being leadership, quality objectives, continuous improvement, and improvement and efficiencies - all of which ultimately result in better working practices and higher customer satisfaction, whether it be a small, medium, or large company.

This standard takes a process led approach that allows you to document and review the structure, procedures and responsibilities needed to achieve an efficient QMS (quality management system).

First, you’ll look at the key requirements for a QMS - for example, planning, determining processes and documented information. You’ll also be required to understand and review your management responsibilities and manage your resources. This could include the entire work environment, as well as your HR system (human resources).

You will also need to check your QMS by conducting internal audits as well as preventative and corrective action.

The 2015 changes to ISO 9001 introduced new terminology and restructured certain pieces of information. The updated ISO 9001 also features further leadership responsibilities, as leadership is key with any QMS.

What are the benefits of ISO 9001?

The benefits to ISO 9001 are endless - the key benefit is it can streamline your processes, making things more efficient and easier for management. Senior management will be able to work with an efficient management process, saving time, effort, and money.

ISO 9001 can make training easier for new employees. Having an effective QMS can also draw new employees to your business and help you to retain your existing employees. ISO 9001 communicates a positive message to your employees and your customers, improving your reputation as a business.

Going through the ISO 9001 process can make you aware of any deficiencies in your services and allow you to act on them, solving any issues that you may encounter on your journey to certification.

You can also gain a further understanding of your customers and their needs, which can also improve your brand reputation and encourage business growth. It can help you to build a better relationship with your suppliers, creating more of a partnership. Having an accredited QMS in place can effectively result in fewer returned products and complaints, and on-time deliveries - allowing your brand to develop a ‘right first-time’ mindset.
